I've got a crazy idea --
This is a democracy, correct? Or at least supposed to be?
Why not give people a choice rather than a mandate. Sell both at gas stations, watch what people buy.
I've seen so many gas stations that sell E85 and no one buys it because it is more expensive per unit of energy.

Wow! rjhenn and I agree on something!
I have tried straight gasoline and E10 gasoline in several vehicles over the years. In every vehicle except the flex fuel one, mpg has been 10% lower with E10 fuel.
Thus adding ethanol to gasoline is like adding water to soup. It adds volume, but not more energy.

slicerette - "When Obama mandated that U.S. gov't Flexfuel Vehicles must used e85, U.S. gov't fuel consumption went up."
Quite likely, since you get less mpg from alcohol than from regular gasoline. The real question is, how did their oil consumption change.
That could go either way, though it seems most likely that they simply spent more money and used about the same amount of oil. Corn ethanol doesn't appear to be a viable path to reduced dependency on foreign oil.

It gets worse - our gasoline prices went up this summer as the price of ethanol went up because of the drought. And if we are driving less and using less fuel but Obama's EPA is mandating that in 2013 - More ethanol has to be put in less gasoline, then more E15 blender pumps will be installed and more mandates that Flexfuel vehicles must use e85.
When Obama mandated that U.S. gov't Flexfuel Vehicles must used e85, U.S. gov't fuel consumption went up.
Please Pres. Obama stop the increase of ethanol for 2013.

easy to see they are not team "America" players...not having "ethanol" money to contribute to all the politicians would be devastating.

For the first time in a while they have a great price and market for their corn. Why should they help dismantle it?

food for fuel , not a good idea. we have oil fields that are huge in the midwest , but it is on national parks land. it is time to open these up and use our energy that we have. and not send the oil we drill overseas. we want energy independence, but we will not do what has to be done.

Answer? Put more corn in your tank. Drive up that price!!

PTBpricer , you do know that the 15% mandate was from GW Bush, don't you? So by voting for change you must mean you'll be NOT voting Rebublican. Me too!

This ethanol mandate needs to go. Besides not being an energy independent product (you need oil to farm the corn and oil to provide energy to make ethanol), we are suffering a loss of feed corn.

This EPA mandate and the stubbornness of not logically reducing or eliminating it is enough to make me vote for change in 2012.

There shouldn't be a mandate on ethanol mixixng. It should be market driven. But I guess "Big Brother" nows what's best for us.

To answer the question: they should remove the mandate completely, until there are reliable sources of ethanol produced from non-food crops, such as algae, switchgrass or hemp. Even then, the level of the mandate should track available supply.
This whole affair simply demonstrates another major source of our current problems: too many hands out without thinking of what's good for the country as a whole.
