Great Lakes prices dogged by refining malfunctions, issues

GasBuddy Blog -- The Great Lakes is poised to get a bump up in prices, similar in reason to what happened on the West Coast earlier this year as multiple refineries report issues in the region.

Great Lakes region saw prices for immediate gasoline delivery jump 10-cents per gallon early Monday morning and are the highest in the nation, beating out the West Coast for the dubious title of "most expensive wholesale gasoline prices" in the nation.

This coming on the heels of reports of a downed coker at BP's massive Northwest Indiana refinery, and weekend reports of issues at Citgo's Lemont, IL refinery, as well as Phillips 66's refinery in Wood River, IL. Combined, these facilities have the capacity to refine nearly one million barrels of crude...

Yes, the 'cane season will cause problems this year. Haven't had many hits lately, so it's bound to happen and it will drive prices up.

This is what has been pushing Ernesto south of the earlier/initial forecast tracks. A forecast mid-level pressure trough that was to weaken the Atlantic ridge and allow Ernesto to turn toward NW and then eventually North, has been slow to emerge off the Eastern U.S. coast. If this continues, Ernesto will be driven into Central America south of the Yucatan, which will be bad news for Ernesto and good news for us !

I expect to see the first increase once the system reaches hurricane-strength, given its forecast track enters into the Gulf of Mexico. The second if it reachs Major Hurricane status (Cat III or higher). The 60-cent per-gallon price hike in the St. Louis region experienced since June was due to the refinery 'issues' in this article, following the latest jobs report that 163,000 new jobs was signs the economy is recovering. There were two price hikes last week - 25-cents followed two days later a 12-cent hike - that on top of a price hike the week before of ~20-cents per gallon. Prior to Katrina (2005), gasoline had already began its creep upward that started in 2001. I remember 'finding' $2.49 a gallon as being the 'low spot' in prices as I drove back from a scientific conference in California (which was then were above $3 per-gallon), the weekend Katrina struck the Mississippi/Louisiana coast. It spiked [then] to over $3 per-gallon, before retreating into the low $2 per-gallon range over the fall and winter.

The other one off Cape Canaveral is about to dissipate (10%). Still, the jitters will drive prices up.

Thunderstorms have completely filled in around the low pressure, and upper-level outflow has been observed developing since this afternoon. Late this afternoon, the Monsoon trof off the Cape Verde Islands was increased to a 70% probability of developing into the Tropical system in the next 48 hours. The disturbance in the Bahamas was dropped to a 20% chance of developing over the next 48 hour period.

After having for the first time in modern history, four named Tropical systems before July 1st (first 30 days of the Atlantic Hurricane Season).... We've went from having a single Tropical Depression Wednesday evening (TD5), to a Tropical Storm yesterday (Earnesto), and now forecast as hurricane by Sunday - possibly a major hurricane (Cat III or higher) by Tuesday. In the course of less than two days since TD #5 was announced, in the Atlantic Tropical basin... - a second wave off the Cave Verde Islands was identified with a 10% chance of developing into a Tropical system (yesterday morning) - change of tropical development increased to a 30% chance of forming (early this morning) - a third area of tropical disturbance of the U.S. East coast with a 10% chance of forming (mid-morning update) - probability of tropical system develoment have been upgraded for both above mentioned disturbances to 50% and 30%, respectively, at 1400 (2PM EDT). It's usually 25 or 30 when it spikes and then slooowly trickles back down.
