Martinman: I'm sure that ppl can find the tropical outlook information in many places.
Yes, the 'cane season will cause problems this year. Haven't had many hits lately, so it's bound to happen and it will drive prices up.

The current Atlantic high pressure ridge that is the primary steering mechanism for Tropical systems, has been building and extendeding further southwest. This is what has been pushing Ernesto south of the earlier/initial forecast tracks.
A forecast mid-level pressure trough that was to weaken the Atlantic ridge and allow Ernesto to turn toward NW and then eventually North, has been slow to emerge off the Eastern U.S. coast.
If this continues, Ernesto will be driven into Central America south of the Yucatan, which will be bad news for Ernesto and good news for us !

No, current Tropical activity in the Atlantic basin hasn't been factored in (yet).
I expect to see the first increase once the system reaches hurricane-strength, given its forecast track enters into the Gulf of Mexico. The second if it reachs Major Hurricane status (Cat III or higher).
The 60-cent per-gallon price hike in the St. Louis region experienced since June was due to the refinery 'issues' in this article, following the latest jobs report that 163,000 new jobs was signs the economy is recovering. There were two price hikes last week - 25-cents followed two days later a 12-cent hike - that on top of a price hike the week before of ~20-cents per gallon.
Prior to Katrina (2005), gasoline had already began its creep upward that started in 2001. I remember 'finding' $2.49 a gallon as being the 'low spot' in prices as I drove back from a scientific conference in California (which was then were above $3 per-gallon), the weekend Katrina struck the Mississippi/Louisiana coast. It spiked [then] to over $3 per-gallon, before retreating into the low $2 per-gallon range over the fall and winter.

The Monsoon trof off the Cape Verde Island became Tropical Depression #6 (TD6) yesterday evening at 2300 (1100PM EDT). Here is the first synopsis:
"... WHILE THE CYCLONE UNDERWENT GENESIS RATHER QUICKLY TODAY...IT MAY BE THAT THE SYSTEM WILL NOT DEVELOP MUCH FURTHER. CURRENTLY THE CYCLONE IS BEING AFFECTED BY MODERATE NORTHEASTERLY VERTICAL SHEAR. WHILE THIS SHOULD DIMINISH IN ABOUT A DAY...THE COMBINATION OF ONLY LUKEWARM SEA SURFACE TEMPERATURES AND A FAIRLY DRY STABLE ATMOSPHERE MAY ALLOW THE CYCLONE TO PEAK ONLY AS A LOW-END TROPICAL STORM. AFTER ABOUT TWO DAYS...THE SYSTEM SHOULD BE WEAKENING AND IT MAY NO LONGER BE A TROPICAL CYCLONE BY DAY FOUR OR FIVE AS SUGGESTED BY THE GLOBAL AND REGIONAL HURRICANE MODELS. THE INTENSITY FORECAST IS A BLEND OF THE STATISTICAL LGEM AND SHIPS MODELS AND THE DYNAMICAL GFDL AND HWRF MODELS...WITH A BIT MORE EMPHASIS ON THE LATTER."
-----
Their forecast last night did not call for the system becoming a Tropical Storm before late this evening. Their forecast discussion this morning essentially made the same assertion.
Three hours later they posted the following announcement, as an "update":
"...TROPICAL DEPRESSION SIX BECOMES A TROPICAL STORM...
SATELLITE IMAGES INDICATE THAT TROPICAL DEPRESSION SIX HAS BECOME TROPICAL STORM FLORENCE WITH MAXIMUM SUSTAINED WINDS OF 40 MPH...65 KM/HR."

The system in the trough off the Cape Verde region is already TS Florence (that one is guaranteed to be turning into a 'cane sooner than later).
The other one off Cape Canaveral is about to dissipate (10%).
Still, the jitters will drive prices up.

Earnesto, while not strengthening, has been getting better organized. Thunderstorms have completely filled in around the low pressure, and upper-level outflow has been observed developing since this afternoon.
Late this afternoon, the Monsoon trof off the Cape Verde Islands was increased to a 70% probability of developing into the Tropical system in the next 48 hours.
The disturbance in the Bahamas was dropped to a 20% chance of developing over the next 48 hour period.

Well, August is off to a bang!
After having for the first time in modern history, four named Tropical systems before July 1st (first 30 days of the Atlantic Hurricane Season)....
We've went from having a single Tropical Depression Wednesday evening (TD5), to a Tropical Storm yesterday (Earnesto), and now forecast as hurricane by Sunday - possibly a major hurricane (Cat III or higher) by Tuesday.
In the course of less than two days since TD #5 was announced, in the Atlantic Tropical basin...
- a second wave off the Cave Verde Islands was identified with a 10% chance of developing into a Tropical system (yesterday morning) - change of tropical development increased to a 30% chance of forming (early this morning) - a third area of tropical disturbance of the U.S. East coast with a 10% chance of forming (mid-morning update) - probability of tropical system develoment have been upgraded for both above mentioned disturbances to 50% and 30%, respectively, at 1400 (2PM EDT).
Most recent Atlantic Tropical Weather Outlook
Guess mother nature is making-up for lost time...

well, with Ernesto being predicted to be a 'cane before next weekend, we'll probably see some more rising prices at the pump across the nation.

Looks like we're getting 3 Greedway spikes in an 8 day period. Including the one coming tomorrow, we'll have gone from $3.25 to $4 ($3.999) in 8 days. Unreal.

heysilor from Pittsburg posted...
"Great timing - who's running this, ENRON alumni?"
-----
NO! NO! NO!
You've got it all wrong.
They run Kinder Morgan Energy Partners, the largest U.S. pipeline concern. The company was founded by Richard Kinder, the former Enron COO...
From wiki:
"Richard Kinder was born in Cape Girardeau, Missouri in 1944.[6] He received a B.A. in 1966 and a J.D. in 1968, both from the University of Missouri.[2][7][3][6] In college, he was a member of the Sigma Nu fraternity.[6]
He started his career as a lawyer and real-estate investor in Houston, Texas.[4] After he filed for bankruptcy, he joined the Enron Corporation.[4] He has been friends with its founder, Kenneth Lay, in college.[4] From 1990 to December 1996, he served as its President and COO.[3] In 1996, he left Enron and started a new pipeline company with William V. Morgan, another friend from college.[4][5] They purchased Enron Liquids Pipeline for $40 million.[4] They also merged with KN Energy.[4] From 1994 to 2004, he was a Board member of Baker Hughes.[6]
He serves on the Boards of Directors of Transocean, Waste Management, Inc.[3] He is also Chairman of the Board of the Interstate Natural Gas Association of America and the Santa Fe Pacific Pipeline, and Vice Chairman and Director of the National Petroleum Council.[3]
He is a life trustee of the Museum of Fine Arts, Houston, and a national Board member of the Smithsonian Institution.[2][3][4] He has also donated $15 million to Rice University, and $30 million to enhance parks around Houston, both through his Kinder Foundation.[4] A Republican, he campaigned for Bush-Quayle in 1992, for Bush-Cheney in 2004, for John McCain in 2008, and for Kay Bailey Hutchinson and Tom DeLay.[6]"

I guess this explains the 30 cent jump we saw here in Central Illinois yesterday. :( We almost never go up 10 cents. It's usually 25 or 30 when it spikes and then slooowly trickles back down.
