Does the Wind Production Tax Credit Matter?

technology review -- The fast-growing but still relatively tiny U.S. wind industry is in danger of suddenly spinning to a halt. Its fate will largely depend on whether or not a large federal subsidy for wind power producers, set to expire this year, is renewed. And whether or not the so-called renewable electricity production tax credit (PTC) is extended appears to depend on the outcome of the presidential election.

President Obama supports an extension, whereas Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney has come out in support of letting the credit expire without renewal. One thing is clear: Without an incentive like the PTC, the U.S. wind industry would surely not continue to grow.

The policy was originally established in 1992 as part of an energy bill signed by President George H. W. Bush. It gave a

It matters greatly: It needs to go away.

The government needs to stop picking winners and losers. End all economic credits now. Reduce government expenditures to minimum levels. Get the federal government out of our lives as much as possible.

What matters about a tax credit is that if you are not paying taxes others have to pay them for you.

Too many subsidies already! With record high unemployment for all of Obamas presidency, the government needs to stop giving away money it doesn't have.

The oil industry has the GOP in their pockets. The wind industry has no money yet to give them.

like Romney but this should be extended. or replace in some form. need to encourage the use of solar more than wind, but its still part of getting off oil and becoming independent.

Viable renewables are overlooked in favor of ever confining BIG OIL desired alt fuels like gas and oil. You need to look at Gas and Oil as Alt. And wind and solar as mainstream. Then maybe things might change.

To rawdog: So based on your comment I assume you are saying banks and oil companies etc are top 1% but wind industry companies and their investors are not??

Hopefully, there will just enough of a tax credit to take them down after the industry is bankrupted and sell them to China.

The credit has been around for 20 years now plenty of time for the wind industry to get up and going, time for them to survive on their own
I cannot believe the credit was adjusted for inflation, and increase of almost 50%

This was a tax credit not a subsidy, tax credits require there to be a tax due on which to be offset by the credit, not loan guarantees and grants to solyndra etc like the current administration

Instead of tax subsidies, just funnel all the hot air from the politicians to power the windmills.
