"The plan is to have the turbine, able to generate 150 kilowatts with water running at about seven miles per hour, operate for a year and then add more turbines in different locations."
Interesting technology. Wave power has been around, but this is the first I know being commercialized.

The initial cost seems high to me for only 150 KW. I wonder what the environmentalists will find to complain about on this project, and if they will stop the power company from adding the other planned turbines later.

I would think the corrosion would be unmanageable -- power turbines in sea water?? The "starting price" of the generated electricity will be "almost double" Maine's average electricity prices. This project should be dropped before the taxpayers pay the $21 million for it.

cool, could be a new avenue to generate some power.. I am sure like most, up front costs will be high, but maybe in the long run it could pay off.. at least it is a new type of power generation.

The project cost seems high just for 1200 homes. But if it works, and can be increased or used in other areas, it might pay off in the long run.

There are many good ideas on how to generate electricity but they all need to be cost effective. High energy prices will and has led to job loses and pain for the poor. To hell with global warming, if this nut case idea leads to starvation, poverty and death.

It will be very interesting to see if their man-made structures can be built to withstand the forces of nature.

Nice to see a scaled up try to use tidal turbines to generate electricity. If and when the use of tidal turbines in generating electricity proves economically sound, proves it does not harm fish or crustacian populations, harm the commercial or recreational fishing industry and does not pose a hazard to navigation, it seems like a reasonable avenue to pursue in our quest for electric power.

Sounds like an ideal place for such an idea. The turbines could work like the mechanism of a self-winding watch. The OMG nabobs naysay about wind turbines knocking down birds. I wonder how many fish will get whacked before someone complains about this innovation.
